This book is set in Southern Canada, in Buxton. Almost everyone who lives there is a former slave turned free. One day, Mrs. Holton gives 2,200 dollars to Mr. Leroy to buy his family back out of slavery. When Mr. Leroy entrusts the Preacher to take the money to buy his family back, the Preacher steals the money and gambles it away. Elijah, the first free-born black in Buxton, sets off to return the money and punish the Preacher.
This book talks about the segregation and some stories that happened during that period. I think that the author is trying to inform us on some of the injustices in that period of time. It really shows that slavery is a very bad thing by describing the dirty and cruel state that the slaves he met were in, like the dirty clothes and the chains bound around them so they wouldn’t escape. It must have been a horrible time back then. I like this book because it shows a lot of feelings from the slaves, and shows them their point of view on things happened in those days. It’s also interesting, and different from most stories about the segregation because it involves a person who steals money and has a different plot from most slavery books.
